MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE Team Building Activity

You’ve most definitely heard of this one. That’s probably because the famous Marshmallow Challenge is a classic problem-solving exercise and the origin of all other team building activities!

It was invented by Peter Skillman and made popular by Tom Wujec. Originally created as a simple design exercise for business school graduates to improve collaboration and innovation, it was conducted all over the country. The results were analyzed and showed that kindergarteners were in many cases more successful than some of the most brilliant people in the world.

Because they weren’t afraid to try… and fail. And try again until they figured out which design structure worked the best. They weren’t afraid to be creative and solve the problem.

The kindergarteners back then may have had no idea that it even was a design exercise. They just knew it was fun. It was a game. And the same holds true for kids who attempt it today.

That’s why I love this team builder and variations of it. It creates a fun environment for kids that encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation—something all good coaches and educators can get behind.  It’s suitable for teams of all ages and backgrounds, the perfect way to kick off a meeting, practice, or special event at school.
