Magic Writing Space

Can a writing spot perform magic? I think so!

In May, I took a fun girls trip to Florida with my daughter. Relaxed & recharged, I couldn’t wait to get back home to start writing again, whip our gardens into shape, paint the inside casing of our new windows, and do all the summer things. But the universe had other plans.

On the last night of our trip, I injured my back. Two small bones popped out of place and left me out of commission for 5 weeks. No, I wasn’t in traction or anything but I couldn’t move much. Painting and planting flowers were out. Ice and a heating pad were in. And my desire to write disappeared.

And then my mom went into the hospital for 10 days only to come home for a week and go back in for 12 more. Suddenly, my back problem and inability to do all the things I had planned seemed trivial.

But during it all, this small area on our deck, where I love to write, was a bright spot. I’d step outside each morning with my coffee and will my mom to get better. I didn’t dare sit in these chairs though, much less let my mind think about stories. My back made sure of that! But I hoped that when things went back to normal, I could.

I had dreamed of adding windows to this spot for so long. We finally installed them last fall and seeing them from the outside after a long winter felt pretty magical even when things were in chaos. They completely transformed the space and cozied up my summer writing spot. But best of all, after all my prayers and calls out to the universe in this place, my mom is on the mend. And now that my back is too, I can actually sit in these chairs and get some writing done!

I hope you’re having an enchanted summer and soaking up all the magic in your space too. You never know what good things will come if you wish hard enough!
